An iceberg is often used as a metaphor to show the relationship between the conscious and the subconscious. What you are aware of is merely the very tip of the iceberg; the rest of the iceberg, the subconscious, is all submerged under water.
One of the basic ideas in Esprit Dessin is that there are six Mind functions and three levels of consciousness, existent in all human beings universally. That is not to say we do not have individual differences. When we think about the Mind functions, we must consider some other characteristics and identities that we have.
The Primitive level of consciousness has been shaped through the survival of human beings as a species in natural environments.
The Individual level of consciousness has been shaped through the adjustment to a family environment and its surroundings
The Societal level of consciousness has been shaped through the adjustment to a social environment.
Each being has six Mind functions, each which is unique - there are no overlaps in any of the functions. The six Mind functions are: the Intuition function, the Spirit function, the Thinking function, the Body function, the Love function, and the Group function.
As a few examples, the Thinking function allows one to identify how to study; the Love function allows one to identify how to love; and the Group function allows one to identify how to work.
There are 18 “characters” from a combination of the three different levels of consciousness and the six different Mind functions. For example, the love function at the individual level is represented by a “Relationships character."
